Space of Gentle Reflections

Listening to your heart when your mind feels stuck

In the community we have been sharing stories on overthinking, times of feeling stuck and a disconnection from intuition.

And today, this is an exploration on why we get stuck and what it means to move forward.

When we feel stuck, where do we often turn to first? Our mind.

We plan, prepare and try to think our way through the experience - all with good intention and sometimes this can lead to a clear route forward.

Other times?

This can add to our sense of overwhelm, overthinking, rumination and potentially feeling more stuck than when we started.

Why does thinking harder not actually help us move forward and why does it feel so exhausting?

If we are not intentional with our focus, we may default to ‘survival mode’ and overthinking is a control strategy to try and help us ‘think’ our way into safety.

If we can figure our every detail, every possible outcome, every step forward, it feels that we will be able to navigate and manage the unknown (or avoid having to sit with the unknown)

Our nervous system is seeking safety and instead of turning inward, to what only the body and heart can truly answer - we attempt to solve uncertainties through the mind, creating fog, rumination and a disconnect from our intuition.

So where does the heart settle in and how can we tap into this space more intentionally for forward motion?

Listening to our heart is where we find our aliveness, dropping down from the headspace, into the body, below the noise of the world.

A place of inner-knowing that can often be forgotten when we try to ‘think’ our way through.

If we were to partner with ourselves, instead of fighting against the turbulence within, could we seek to allow the heart to be the compass, the mind to be the map and our body to be the vessel?

To do this requires intention and a choice.

A choice to create space, to quiet the fear and to the quiet the pressure so we can listen within.

If your mind feels foggy, you may like to gently ask why.

What am I carrying right now that is clouding my focus, judgment and my ability to move forward clearly?

What is this fog within my mind?

What is this stagnant energy within my body that is disconnecting me from being able to truly feel my next step forward?

If the mind is here to map our way forward, it makes fitting sense as to why we become overwhelmed when we are closed off from the heart (our compass) and our body (the vessel).

For how can we map a path forward, if the compass and the vessel for travel is not clear?

The compass is not a defined outcome, simply a way of navigation, led by a Northstar. And the vessel? An instrument that holds energy, tunes to the environment and processes our emotions along the way.

So the invitation when overwhelmed is to consider.

How can I quiet the mind?

What is my mind clouded by in this moment?

Where is my heart guiding me?

How can I move the stagnant energy through my body to create space for clarity?

We cannot think our way through disregulation, there are parts within us that we have to feel and move through.

Often our heart knows what our mind keeps trying to figure out and it is about building a practice within our lives to listen to it more often.

A form of movement, exercise, shaking, dancing, breathing, humming, stretching, singing - something that helps us to shift our body state, will help us to shift the mind.

Instead of forcing answers, it may be interesting for us to question and consider, what environments can I create within myself and my surroundings that may allow clarity to emerge?

Gentle growth, gentle process, gentle evolution.

We build patterns overtime and often we are re-learning how to grow beyond the patterns of a lifetime.

A heart-led life, the more it is practiced (especially during times of distress), will lead us to new ways of navigating through life with a little more clarity, intention and integrity within our actions.

I hope this invites a gentle reminder that the mind cannot always lead the way.

So if you feel stuck and the mind feels foggy, it may be because there are parts within you longing for your attention that have been a little bit ignored.

Maybe the body needs movement for stagnant energy to be released.

And the heart needs to speak.
